Look Three Weeks Ahead and Deep Fakes

For two bonus quizzes in a row, Tsz alone earned the highest score, this time on Bonus Quiz 4 – Display, Shift/Ctrl, Boot-up, Binary, IPOS.

As with the previous class session, I gave one of my signature lecture/demonstration this past Saturday. But this time it is a full-length presentation with the first half:

L2A Job Hunting and Fulfillment Process

L2A Job Hunting and Fulfillment Process (Tables' Borders Visible)

and the second half:

L2B Walkthrough of A3 using an actual job posting and sample tailored documents

Like L1 (Benjamin Franklin), both L2A (Albert Einstein) and L2B (Elvis Presley) will take visitors to each fictitious student's homepage but unlike the first homepage, the later two homepages each contain a link to their fictitious classmates -- the other two being Marie Curie and Florence Nightingale. I hope these five sample homepages and websites will give my real-life students ideas on how they may want to present their accomplishments in IS101-3003, Spring 2023 and anything else they want to share with the world via A4 Homepage, Website, Online Publishing.

The links above take visitors to the webpage version of my L2 presentation. During my in-class presentation this past Saturday, I used the source PowerPoint slideshow file for presentation via a traditional projector against a roll down screen. I hope (a) the use of prominently sized text, contrasting colors, slide transitions, animation effects in arresting audience's attention and (b) the use of [Timing] settings such as [Start] & [Duration] and [Text Animation] setting such as [Group text] to control the flow and cadence of the slideshow in alignment with my presentation planted ideas in my students' creative minds.

This past Saturday's class session was also an embarkation to a higher-level of success and their first Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exam. For the first four weeks, most students gained their sea legs with some already running instead of walking or crawling. With the next three weeks' activities fully published in Canvas and the MO-100 Word certification exam at the end of that three weeks, a handful of students are already sailing flank speed ahead passing their markers in Chapter 4 Microsoft Word ^_^

Before class ended, Khylie, Elijah, Diego, and Kimberly expressed interest to be the first to participate in A5 Slideshow Presentation. Khylie has already sent in her draft version slideshow and just now, I see Tsz's Task 2 of A3 Tailored Cover Letter and Resume in my email Inbox :-)

John Oliver's Facial Recognition video from my previous blog post definitely opened some eyes and dropped some jaws. This week's 7 min 45 sec video on Deep Fake will likely do more!

Students, please share your professional thoughts on what you learned from this Deep Fake video in your comment to this blog post.

  1. I myself thought that face swap was kind of sinister. It is getting harder and harder to spot deepfakes as the technology of face swapping increases. There are so many new apps for it too. With the advancement of deep learning and AI, they are now able to create realistic images. I've heard them talk about the manipulation of videos and fake news, and what a scary thought, to impersonate people in power.

  2. Just because one can doesn't mean one should. It is scary to know there is this technology out there that population of people will use to extort ,create havoc and potential mental disorders.

  3. With the recent developments of AI, I have seen a lot of videos on Instagram showing exact replica voices of Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and many more presidential figures. The dialogue in these videos were a little more than just vulgar, and it is frightening to see how younger generations will react to these videos and think they are real.

  4. Deepfake is something I knew was around but never put much thought into it. Now, watching the video it's shown me the dangers of deep fakes and the positive, Deep fakes seems like a more dangerous source for people who want to harm others use these technologies and to think that people do this is frightening. Deep fakes give people doubt on what they're actually looking at. Now I wonder how many fake faces I've seen on T.V.

  5. I think deep fake is good an excuse. If you were posted a pornography to the Internet shame about that, you could claimed that it was made by deep fake and would not get anxious.

  6. Wow. The fact that AI has gone this far to be able to impersonate other people/celebrities and be incredibly realistic is alarming. I can see this becoming an immense problem in the future, as it can be used to manipulate public opinion and spread false information.

  7. Deep fake creates an environment of doubt. That is so true. It is scary to think about ways people can misuse this new technology. There needs to be some cautions and restrictions of how it will be used.

  8. Deep fakes have been running rampant even more recently, I will say that some videos are a bit funny and satirical, however this is also something that has the ability to cause harm to many individuals!

  9. The first time that I was aware of being exposed to this was when I saw a video of "Keanu Reeves" doing John Wick stunts in his "apartment." Turns out it was a fake, but it took me by surprise because it looked REAL. I don't know if anyone has seen this, but this reminds me of the digital version of the movie Face-Off with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

  10. Most deep fakes are still relatively stationary and low fidelity. However, when they become even more lifelike and easier to use you won't be able to discern real events unless you are involved in said events, which is going to cause so many problems. Misinformation is already as bad as it is with this it'll be a nightmare.
